PITCH
FINAL PRODUCTION PITCH
This is my pitch for my advanced portfolio final production. For my final production I will be coming up with an original idea and filming a 5 minute extract of a documentary, by myself.
The name for my documentary is ‘The Forgotten Generation’, I came up with this name as it fits really well with the subject of my documentary. The subject of the documentary is going to be about the older generation and how the pandemic has isolated them from the world, it will also show how there mental health has deteriorated over the national lockdowns. I picked this topic as I am very close to my grandparents and I can see first hand how the COVID-19 has deeply effected them form there every day lives.
I have chosen to film my grandparents closely and interview then on their views of the pandemic and how they feel they have been cut off form everything and everybody. I will be filing them in their own houses as they are not allowed to socialise in other places as their are shielding due to the pandemic. When filming I will use personal protective equipment for the safety of both me and others around me. I have received consent for filming my grand parents and for using there houses. I will be asking them questions such as ‘how lonely do they feel now, compared to when the world was normal place to live?’ and other questions about how their emotions feel towards the younger generations for isolating and instructing them what to do.
My primary target audience will be adults both male and female from the ages of 50 and upwards. I will target it at all ethnicity groups, all classes, all family sizes etc. as everyone can relate to age, as it is something everyone has in common. I will target it at the older generations primarily as this topic is something they can all relate to and emphasis with. The secondary audience will then be targeted at the younger generations to show them how their own acts has substantially effected their elders. The tertiary audience will be 30-50 years olds as they have the power to change these issues and they can come up with solutions to help the older generations mental health.
I have chosen to air my documentary on BBC 1, as the main demographic for BBC 1 is adults from 35 and over. I feel like this is a good platform to distribute and air my documentary as BBC 1 is a widely viewed channel. BBC 1 has many similar documentaries aired on it like 'Our Family. But I also feel that if I aired my documentary on Netflix, a younger demographic would also view my documentary.
I will continue to research filming modes of documentaries in more detail to ensure that I pick the right ones to fully convey my topic. I still need to do a lot more research into this topic and talk to more people how they feel about this issue. I also need to do some further research and practice on premiere pro and use some more advanced tools as I didn’t manage to use any last year as I no access to them during the national lockdown.
I will follow obvious codes and conventions such as interviews to really get out as much information form the participants, I would like my interviews to fit the same structure as the documentary 'The Social Dilemma' as I feel the pre interviews worked really well at humanising the interviewee. I will also use camera shots such as close ups to really exaggerate my grandparents emotions and feelings. I will use voice overs to narrative the activities within the documentary and to make sense of different scenes and locations.
When I filmed my preliminary task and edited it, I overlaid archived footage, over a video of me waking up for the day. I had a lot of positive feedback on this editing technique, so I feel like it would be a good technique to use in my final production. I may also use a section of the theme from my preliminary task as I enjoyed filming ‘A day in the life of’.
I shouldn't face any problems when filming but due to the current pandemic, guidelines and rules are changing all the time, so I will just have to work within the governments guidelines when filming which may limit me.
